Sizing Up the Damage

A small ding with no crease

Usually cosmetic; the door still works

A dent that pops or snaps as it passes the curve

The section is bent enough to stress the hinges

A creased or folded section

That section needs replacing

The door is crooked or a roller came out

Possible track and cable damage; stop using it

Cracked hinges above the dent

The impact spread past one section

Can One Section Be Replaced?

Sometimes. A garage door is made of horizontal sections, and in theory you can swap just the damaged one.

In practice, there are catches. The new section has to match the old ones in style, color and thickness and line up with its neighbors. Door makers retire designs, especially window patterns, so an older door may have no match available.

Sections bought one at a time also cost a lot. With a technician's labor added, replacing one or two sections can come close to the cost of a whole new door. And one dent often damages more than one section, because they bend together.

When a New Door Makes More Sense

  • The door is more than about 15 years old.
  • Your style or color has been discontinued.
  • Two or more sections are damaged.
  • The door was already rusty, drafty or noisy.

In those cases, a full door often looks better and costs only a bit more. See garage door replacement and the price ranges in new door cost.

Insurance

If you hit your own door with your car, it's often covered by your auto policy, minus the deductible.

If someone else hit it, their auto insurance may pay. Take photos before anything is moved and ask the technician for a written quote that you can send in.

Homeowners insurance sometimes comes into play for storm damage, such as a tree limb in a summer thunderstorm. Check your policy.

Small Dents

A shallow dent with no crease usually doesn't affect how the door works. If it doesn't bother you, it's fine to leave it. A good technician won't push a new door over a cosmetic ding.

Avoid spending on cosmetic fixes for a door you plan to replace soon. New weatherstrip or paint on a door with a bent section is money you won't get back.
